Second Letter to Pope Francis

Writer's picture: Ray AbadRay Abad

Your Holiness Pope Francis,

I write to you with a humble suggestion, inspired by the scientific principle of reverse osmosis, which I believe offers a compelling analogy for our spiritual journey and could be a valuable tool in guiding this millennium closer to Jesus Christ.

Reverse osmosis, in its simplest form, is a process of purification. Water molecules, representing spiritual purity and closeness to God, are compelled to pass through a membrane, leaving behind impurities – the temptations and worldly attachments that hinder our relationship with Him. This process requires pressure, representing our conscious efforts, spiritual disciplines, and reliance on Divine Grace, to overcome the "osmotic pressure" – the allure of worldly distractions.

The formula for this process, J = Kw * (ΔP - Δπ), where J represents the rate of purification, Kw our openness to grace, ΔP the spiritual "pressure" we apply, and Δπ the "osmotic pressure" of worldly influence, can be adapted to represent the spiritual journey of individuals and the Church as a whole.

We can envision "J" as the growth of faith and the Church's effectiveness in bringing souls to Christ. "Kw" becomes our receptiveness to the Holy Spirit and willingness to embrace change, "ΔP" our active engagement in prayer, service, and evangelization, and "Δπ" the constant pull of secularism and temptation.

By understanding this analogy, we can better appreciate the challenges we face in our spiritual lives. It highlights the need for constant effort, a humble openness to God's grace, and a firm resistance to the temptations that draw us away from Him. It also emphasizes the importance of the Church as a community, supporting one another in this process of purification and growth.

I believe that by exploring and sharing this analogy, we can provide a fresh and accessible way for people to understand the spiritual journey. It offers a framework for self-reflection, encouraging individuals to examine their own "permeability" to grace, the "pressure" they are applying in their spiritual disciplines, and the "osmotic pressure" of worldly influences they face.

Furthermore, this analogy can be a valuable tool for the Church in its mission of evangelization. It can help us communicate the message of Christ in a way that resonates with people in a scientific and technological age, demonstrating that faith and reason are not mutually exclusive, but rather complementary paths to truth.

I offer this reflection with the hope that it may be of some use in your ongoing efforts to lead the faithful closer to Jesus Christ. I pray for your continued guidance and wisdom as you shepherd the flock entrusted to your care.

With utmost respect and filial devotion,
